W e seem to have a reprieve for Oppo, at least for now, and who knows for how long . Time to establish new quarters, perhaps, with the heroic efforts of our own (looking at you Nick and Rally). G/O says it’s “reevaluating” keeping the personal pages.

So then why do we put up a masthead with the ever-popular “herb” epithet against the CEO of the company that will decide whether or not to nuke us? It’s nothing more than a childish personal insult, unworthy of the quality people on Oppositelock (whether or not it’s true) . It has a zero per cent chance of bringing a positive response, but it does have a non-zero per cent chance (judging from recent events) of adding to this company’s decision that maybe these personal pages should go after all.

All I’m saying is let’s keep to adult behavior and analysis on this subject, when we discuss it here, and otherwise avoid epithets. Shouldn’t our “be excellent” credo apply even beyond our membership, even to people whose actions don’t warrant it? My priority is to preserve this awesome community. To me, the momentary gratification that comes from insulting a person whose actions deserve it isn’t worth risking that.

I agree. It surprises me a bit, considering these finance types are stereotypically even more thick skinned than they are egotistical. But we can only work with the opponent we are given, not the one we deserve.

Agreed! Oppo isn’t gone yet, so I am on the Oppo Discord and helping how I can with Oppo 2.0 (NickhasanExocet is doing most of that)...

But until then, I shall keep commenting and posting on Oppo as usual! :)

Agreed completely. I’m all for us preparing a backup plan in case we need to jump ship in a hurry down the road. And I’m all for being upset when someone comes in and starts making bad decisions that affect tons of people, especially with no warning. Poking the bear does nothing to fix said bad decisions , but it could easily cause more harm.

The fact remains that the best future for Oppo is most likely one in which it can remain here - and where we can all continue to use it free of charge. I applaud the work Nick and others are doing and I think it’s worth finishing, if only to have in our back pocket for protection . If we are ever forced to use it though, the ramifications would likely be large. Our user base would for sure take a large hit, possibly fracturing irreparably . We’d all need to either support the site monetarily, or figure out a working revenue stream. There may be legal issues even.

There are better ways to stand up and resist then name calling

All true. Add to that the likelihood that we would have fewer new users coming in if divorced from the FP completely. We would need to work harder to remain vital...which is doable, if necessary, but it’s better if it’s not thrust upon us.

I agree with you wholly. If you wanna call Spanfeller a Herb, do it elsewhere on Kinja. The dude has such thin skin he’s almost transparent.

That’s probably why people keep egging it on. The lengths he’s going to prevent people calling him a Herb are absolutely insane. Bet if the comments on Deadspin weren’t disabled 110% of them would basically say the same thing.

This whole thing would be comical if it weren’t threatening our little home here.

Work harder to remain vital you say? I wonder if we could convince Patrick to occasionally take Oppo stories he likes and kick them up to the front page. Oppo gets to stick around, G/O gets free stories to run, Oppo quality goes up. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Have there been Oppo posts shared to the FP since the divorce from the jalopnik.com domain? I know we got banished to being a kinja.com domain because people were abusing the fact that they could say they wrote on jalopnik.com and not be 100% wrong but I can’t remember if that killed oppo posts getting shared to the FP or if those just died out on their own.

Even after all that settled down, Patrick said that he can’t take anymore articles without some kind of compensation, for legal reasons. But that doesn’t necessarily exclude your idea. Publications take free lance stuff all the time. The amount paid doesn’t have to be high, as long as it’s agreed upon.

Yeah I can’t tell you the answer either, but I do think that would be really cool if it could be brought back. When I first got authorship here that was still a thing - certain articles would get front paged occasionally . I felt like it upped the quality of articles in some ways - if you knew there was a chance your work could be seen by lots of people, it made sense to put a little extra time in it now and again. Unfortunately some people abused it like you mentioned, but I’m not sure if that’s why it stopped. I do remember one of the Jalopnik staff (perhaps Patrick?) in a comment on a FP article explaining that they were no longer taking work from Oppo as a rule. The reasoning for it was never put out there as far as I know though.
